EXILE ATSUSHI, who will celebrate his 39th birthday on April 30—the last day of the Heisei era—is releasing a best-of album titled “TRADITIONAL BEST,” themed around “the spirit of Japan”!EXILE,solo work, and RED DIAMOND DOGS—has consistently pursued a wide range of musical activities. The theme “The Spirit of Japan” has long been central to his work. As an artist born
in Japan, he reflects on the country itself and the people who live there; from these reflections, the theme “The Spirit of Japan” was born, and he has continued his various activities under this theme.
In 2009, he presented a celebratory song to His Majesty the Emperor at the National Celebration marking the 20th anniversary of His Majesty’s accession to the throne. He has also performed at numerous commemorative events celebrating friendship between Japan and other nations, such as the “Japan-ASEAN Music Festival: Prayers for Disaster Recovery,” held to mark the 40th anniversary of Japan-ASEAN friendship and cooperation, andthe “Japan-Vietnam Friendship Music Festival” commemorating the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with Vietnam, and the “Israel Embassy 70th Anniversary of Statehood Concert.” As a Correctional Support Officer for the Ministry of Justice, I have also continued to visit correctional facilities such as prisons and juvenile detention centers to provide support and encouragement.
In terms of her musical works, she composed the children’s song “Furusato” as a congratulatory gift for a friend who had a baby; she covered “Ai San San” by Hibari Misora, a historic song in the history of Japanese pop music; and she co-wrote two songs—“Zankei” and “Tenon”—with renowned Japanese musician Joe Hisaishi. He co-wrote “Soredemo Ikiteyuku” with the prodigious pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, and has also composed his own songs such as “Michishirube” and “Kirameki no Uta.” For the 81st NHK National School Music Competition, he wrote “Sakura no Kisetsu” specifically as the required piece for the junior high school division.
He has infused all of these songs with the spirit of “the Japanese heart” and has continued to sing them with love. A best-of album packed with all of
that love and passion will be released on April 30—the last day of the Heisei era and ATSUSHI’s 39th birthday!
