for Ryuichi Sakamoto’s Original Album “12” This marks his first original album in about six years since the 2017 release of “async.”
Amid his ongoing battle with illness, this collection brings together 12 tracks selected from musical sketches he created as if writing a diary, compiled into a single album; each track’s title corresponds to the date it was composed.
The artwork features drawings created specifically for this album by artist Lee Ufan, a close friend of Sakamoto’s.

Comment from Ryuichi Sakamoto:
In early March 2021, after undergoing major surgery and a long hospital stay, I “returned” to my new temporary home. At the end of March, as my body began to recover a little, I found myself reaching for the synthesizer on a whim.I had no intention of creating anything; I simply wanted to immerse myself in “sound.” I felt that doing so would help heal the damage to my body and mind, even if just a little. Until then, I hadn’t had the physical strength to even listen to music, let alone make any myself, but from that day onward, I would occasionally and casually touch the keys of my synthesizer or piano, recording sketches as if writing a diary.From those, I selected 12 sketches that I liked and compiled them into an album. I’ve left them completely unprocessed, deliberately presenting them in their raw form. I will likely continue keeping this kind of “diary” until my strength runs out. Ryuichi
