The third installment in the “Year Book” series, released in 2017.
Originally intended to cover the entire decade of the 1980s, there were simply too many candidates to include, so this volume focuses on works from the first half of the 1980s.
While it includes studio tracks such as “Photo Musik (Dub),” which was played only once on the radio, the defining feature of this album is that it contains a large number of live tracks being released to the public for the first time.
These include the 1980 live track “Finale,” a collaboration with Phew; live performances with the band B-2 Units, which was formed at that time; the choral piece “Novel,” a commissioned work for the Tokyo Mixed Chorus—a piece so radical in its lyrics by Ryu Murakami that some choir members refused to sing it;and finally, rare recordings from the 1984 Kanagawa Arts Festival’s “Series of Contemporary Japanese Composers: The World of Ryuichi Sakamoto,” where he performed five songs from *Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence* and three solo pieces alongside guest artists Yuji Takahashi and Aki Takahashi.
As with previous releases, the album comes with a booklet featuring an interview with Ryuichi Sakamoto discussing the music and rare photographs from that era. This third installment in the
