A 2007 film directed by François Girard. Set in various locations—including Europe, Egypt, Russia, and Japan—the film depicts scenes from each region in the style of a travelogue, which Sakamoto enhances with music that has a classical flair.In “First Trip to Japan,” the journey across the snowy plains of Siberia to Japan is first depicted through a melancholic melody played by strings, followed by a grand soundscape created by the horn section and cymbals, and finally, a melody played on a stone flute leads the listener into an exotic world.The stone flute has a timbre reminiscent of a ryuteki, but its well-balanced overtones blend perfectly with the orchestral sound. The piano piece “Snowy Village,” which plays during the scene where the protagonist arrives in Japan and reaches a snow-covered village, features a very long reverberation; its lingering resonance conveys the density and chill of the air.The piano, used throughout this work, was reportedly recorded at the Glenn Gould Studio in Canada; its somewhat desolate sound may well be an inheritance of Gould’s spirit.In the scene where the protagonist meets a woman who captures his heart in the village, the piece “The Girl” features a piano played in leisurely arpeggios, beautifully interwoven with the faint, husky tones of a violin.The faintness of the sound and the wavering pitch evoke an Eastern beauty distinct from the Western aesthetic, highlighting the beauty of the woman clad in a silk kimono.Although the protagonist ends up traveling to Japan a total of three times, Sakamoto composed a theme song for both the outward and return journeys, and for the second and third trips, he created variations that respond to the changing circumstances, thereby shaping the overall rhythm and passage of time in the film.While much of the music—including short pieces like “Mill Theme” and “Building the Garden,” which make effective use of pizzicato—adheres to classical conventions, “Revolution” takes a sharp turn, unfolding an unsettling soundscape. This work fully showcases the breadth of Sakamoto’s musical repertoire within the soundtrack.
