The “Tohoku Youth Orchestra” is a mixed orchestra composed of students ranging from elementary schoolers to college students from Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima Prefectures, which was launched immediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake at the initiative of Ryuichi Sakamoto.As a memorial concert for its conductor, Ryuichi Sakamoto, who passed away on March 28 of theprevious year, performances were held on March 23, 2024, in Iwate; March 24 in Miyagi; March 30 in Fukushima; and March 31 in Tokyo. The orchestra performed Sakamoto’s representative works—which were also featured in his final piano solo concert program, “Opus”—including“The Last Emperor,” “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence,”“Aqua,” and “The Sheltering Sky”—as well as “El Mar Mediterrani,” which Sakamoto composed specifically for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Opening Ceremony, and “The Song of Japanese Soccer,” known as one of the anthems of Japanese soccer. This album features the complete recording of the concert, which consisted entirely of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s compositions.
Sayuri Yoshinaga and Non participate in the narration segments.
