Distribution of the boxfish: Iwate Prefecture? Southern Kyushu. It is usually found in shallow waters.
Characteristics: Fish of the genus Tetraoplis can be distinguished from other genera in the same family by the absence of supraorbital spines, iliac spines, and a dorsal keel (though some species do possess these features).Both the dorsal and anal fins have 9 soft rays each. The body color is yellowish-brown, and in large males, the back turns a very vivid blue. As juveniles, they resemble the Southern Boxfish, but the black spots on their sides are smaller than the diameter of their eyes.Adults can be distinguished by the absence of small black spots on both the head and tail.
