His first solo album, released in 2009 on commmons. It is a quiet,
entirely instrumental work and marked his first original solo album to feature no synthesizers whatsoever.Centered on
piano and natural sounds, the album features guest appearances by the British early music ensemble Fretwork; shō player Tamami Higashino; Keigo Oyamada of the Gagaku ensemble Nanto Kōyōkai;Hirotaka Shimizu, Ren Takada, Christian Fennes, and Rob Moos—all from diverse genres—were invited to contribute.
The album also includes “disko,” “ice,” and “glacier,” which were strongly influenced by his experiences in the Arctic Circle during the album’s production.
“glacier” was later featured in the film *The Revenant* (directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, 2016).
This album was released in two versions: a “Full Artwork” edition, in which the CD is housed in a case integrated with a booklet featuring text by Ryuichi Sakamoto himself and photographs taken in the Arctic Circle; and a more affordable “Package-Less” edition, featuring simple eco-friendly packaging.

*This product (package-less CD) uses a Digipak tray to protect the data side and is enclosed in a PP bag required for inventory management, along with a protective cover for the CD surface (front: CD cover; back: track listing and minimal credits).If you cut along the perforated lines to remove this cover and insert it into a plastic CD case you no longer need at home, you can store the CD on a CD shelf or similar.
