EXILE’s SHOKICHI releases his first solo album in two years. It’s titled “Underdog.” The album blends rock—one of
his musical roots—with hip-hop.In today’s genre-less
music scene, SHOKICHI is taking on a new musical challenge.
This ambitious project is the result of repeated experimentation by a trio consisting of his longtime collaborator UTA—with whom he’s teamed up countless times on solo projects and with EXILE THE SECOND—and KENJI03 (BACK-ON), with whom he’s working for the first time.Distorted guitar riffs cut through a beat that blends rock and trap. As if mocking this frenzied instrumental, the track features a refreshing top line and witty lyrics. Unlike typical cheer-leading anthems, he labels himself an “underdog” and, while rapping with relentless rhymes, refreshingly celebrates the aesthetics of the underdog.
This marks a new creative frontier for SHOKICHI, who has continued to create music over the past two years—one solo album and two with SECOND.
The B-side features a cover of “ROCKET DIVE” by hide with Spread Beaver.In an era where
rock sounds like hip-hop and hip-hop sounds like rock, SHOKICHI has reimagined this song—which has deeply influenced him for the past 20 years—in his own unique style. Like “Underdog,” it was produced in collaboration with UTA and KENJI03. You’ve never heard “ROCKET DIVE” like this before.
