Box pufferfish
Distribution: Iwate Pref. Southern Kyushu. Usually found in shallow waters.
Characteristics:Separable from other members of the same family by the absence of supraocular and psoas spines and dorsal carinae (some species have them). Both the number of dorsal and anal fin soft rays are 9. Body color yellowish brown, with the larger males having a very bright blue dorsal side. Juveniles resemble the southern spotted kelp, but the black spots on the body are smaller than the eye diameter. Adults can be distinguished by the absence of small black spots on the head and tail.
